IBM used to proudly proclaim that they were one of the best companies to work for with respect to training and development. In 2004, IBM proudly proclaimed that they were ranked #2 in the Training Top 100 for 2003 by Training Magazine. This quote is from their one of their 2004 employee brochures:
"IBM currently invests more than $750 million annually
to develop the knowledge and expertise of its workforce.
Employees spend an estimated 17 million hours each
year (about 55 hours per employee) in formal training—
either online, through experiential learning activities or
in a traditional classroom."
Fast forward to 2009. IBM has not made the top 125 list at Training Magazine for the past 3 years (2007, 2008, 2009). Why ? I suspect that it is because of a lack of focus on employee career development at IBM, and a decrease in funding for employee training.
